Frequently Asked Questions

Find detailed answers on checkposts, foreigner clearance, and road openings.

Do Indian nationals require a permit for Gurez?

No formal tourist permit is required for Indian citizens visiting Dawar (the main town of Gurez Valley) as of 2026. However, carrying your original Aadhaar Card (or other valid government-issued photo ID) is mandatory. You will be stopped at several military and police checkposts (such as Tragbal, Razdan Pass, and Dawar checkpost) to register your credentials. Ensure you carry 3-4 physical photocopies of your ID, as checkposts will retain them.

Do specific border villages or treks require extra clearance?

Yes. While Dawar is permit-free, visiting villages situated very close to the Line of Control (LoC) — such as the Tulail Valley, Chakwali, or undertaking specific trekking expeditions near the border ridges — may still require permission from local authorities or registration with the Dawar police station. We assist our tour groups in obtaining these local clearance clearances.

What is the permit process for foreign nationals?

Foreign tourists require official permit clearance to visit Gurez due to border safety protocols. Applications must be submitted through the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office in Bandipora. We recommend applying at least 7 to 10 days before your travel date. You will need to submit clear copies of your Passport, valid Indian Visa, and detail your travel agency sponsorship or local itinerary.

When is Gurez Valley accessible by road?

Gurez is accessible by road only during the summer and autumn months, typically from May to November. The route passes over the high-altitude Razdan Pass (11,672 feet), which receives heavy snowfall and remains completely closed in winter (usually from December to April). During winter, the only way to reach Gurez is via local government-subsidized helicopter services.

What critical items must I pack and carry?

1. Original government photo ID (Aadhaar or Passport) + 4 photocopies. 2. Postpaid Mobile SIM: Only postpaid mobile networks work in J&K (roaming). BSNL and Jio offer the best coverage in Dawar, though signal strength drops completely in further valleys. 3. Cash: ATMs are scarce and frequently run out of cash beyond Bandipora. Network issues also make UPI and digital wallet transactions highly unreliable. Carry sufficient physical currency. 4. Warm Clothing: Gurez experiences sharp drops in temperature, even in peak summer. Pack thermal layers, windbreakers, and light woollens.
